Benefits of Keeping a Journal
I think it is about time that we end the stigma around writing in a journal. I feel as though it's not a regular thing that you can be comfortable with telling people. I am here to say that I write my thoughts down in my journal and I. Love. It.
It isn't a "dear diary" type of journal, but more of a place where I can get all the thoughts that tend to swarm around in my mind out on paper. When I was younger and got really mad, the only thing that could calm me down was writing an angry letter to someone or something and then ripping it up. Honestly sometimes, you just need to get out what you want to say even if you are not vocally saying those things.
I have found that journaling helps me the most when it comes to anxiety. I have a diagnosed panic disorder which can make the world feel like a really overwhelming and scary place sometimes. When I express my fears and worries through writing, they seem to not be so daunting anymore. I finally feel like I can breathe because it helps me visualize what I'm so anxious about.
Alright, hopefully by now I have enticed you to go out and get your own journal and start writing! Maybe you're wondering where to start, well don't worry I got you.
Step 1: Get a journal
I know this sounds simple, but this step is the most important. Take your time when browsing through journal options and find the one that works the best for you. Things you'll want to take into consideration: color, size, cover design, whether it has pockets, line sizing. The one I chose is a small-medium size and is my favorite color which seems to be halfway between pink and purple. (So magenta? I really don't know what to call it lol). I also chose one with an interesting cover pattern and design. It is simple but elegant.
Step 2: Pick a Reason
There are many different types of journaling. Trust me I would know, as I have tried many of them. If you are more type A and organized with a creative side you should try bullet journaling. For all of my free thinker artsy types, an art journal would be perfect for you. If neither of these are for you and you just want to do you then that is a type of journaling in and of itself. I would say mine is the "just kind of doing my own thing" type. I don't like to restrict myself to have to stay to one theme because sometimes I wanna doodle and make my writings very pretty and sometimes I just have a little bit of time to jot down a thought.
Once you get a journal it's important to personalize it. I took the back of the cover and created a little collage of items and quotes I feel define me and make up my personality. Don't be afraid to express yourself, no one is going to see it other than you so don't be embarrassed. The whole point is to be your undeniable self.
I added quotes that inspired me or I felt described me. I also added a tribute to my hometown because it shaped me and I love it. The butterflies I made 3-D and then added some "clouds" to give it more texture. I love opening up my journal and seeing a reminder of who I am and who I want to be.
Step 3: Be Consistent!
Consistency is key and will make your journaling so much more worth it. Make it a habit to relax with no technology and some peaceful music on and just focus on yourself. I personally love the study beats live music on YouTube. There's no lyrics so it is easy to not get distracted and relax.
As always, thank you for reading and like and comment if you enjoyed!
